HABER, BRITTANY NICOLE
Miss Brittany Nicole Haber, 19 of Green Cove Springs, FL passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011. She had been a resident of Clay County since 1966 after having lived in St. Petersburg where she was born. She was a 2010 graduate of Clay High School and was a member of the volleyball team. In 2010 she was named as a top ten student athlete in the state of Florida and was also named to the Jr. Olympic Volleyball Team in Miami. Following her graduation from CHS, she was awarded a volleyball scholarship from the University of Cincinnati and was currently enrolled in the nursing program at St. John’s River State College. She will be missed by many friends and family including her youth group of Russell Baptist Church. Survivors include her parents, Thomas and Sherri Haber, sister, Tiffany Haber, maternal grandparents, Van and Linda Nash, Jim and Sue Turner, her aunts and uncles Tom (Kim) Hunt, Bill (Emma) McDaniel, Ronnie (Kelly) McDaniel, Wes Nash, Barb Fidler and Pat (Stephanie) Pimmell, many cousins as well as great aunts and uncles. HADDEN, GARY ALLEN
Gary Allen Hadden, Sr. 54, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Delhi, NY had been a resident of Middleburg since 2001 when he moved from Inverness, Fla. While in Delphi, he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department and was a co-owner of a towing and mechanic business. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Survivors include his children, Gary Allen Hadden, Jr.; and Jamie Lea Hadden, 2 brothers, David L Hadden and Ronald Hadden, Jr.; 3 sisters, Jean Oliver; Joan Cash; and Laurel Gracey, 1 grandson, Nolan "The Nugeť" Williams; and 1 furry grandson, Pee Weeť. Hadrava, Lawrence C. Sr.
Lawrence C. Hadrava, Sr., (Larry), 71, of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL. Larry was born on October 15, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, IA, to the late Jerry and Evelyn Hadrava. He married Anna Flender, on April 15, 1961. Mr. Hadrava worked as a lithographic printer at W.R. Grace, Cryovac Division, in Cedar Rapids, for 28 years. He had previously worked at Peter Pan Bakery and Witwer's Grocery. He retired and moved to Jacksonville in 1994 after suffering a massive heart attack. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Larry cherished his family and was a devoted member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Destinations Unlimited Tours Travel Club and enjoyed traveling to Branson, a Caribbean cruise, an Amish bus tour as well as many day trips. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate Anna of 50 years, son Larry Hadrava Jr (Leah), grandchildren Amber Hadrava, Christopher Hadrava and Karl Whitlow and a wide circle of friends. Hagen, Margaret E.
Ms. Margaret E. Hagen, 96 of Penney Farms, passed away July 17, 2012. Ms. Hagen was born January 9, 1916 in Brooklyn New York to the late Carl Conrad and Hannah (Soderstron) Edlund. She was a Home Technician and of the Presbyterian Faith. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, who were immigrants from Sweden; her sister Ingeborg Edlund Prairie of Syracuse NY; her husband The Reverend Dr. Paul P. Hagen, who was an ordained Presbyterian minister and former Executive Director of Penney Retirement Community; and her daughter Paula M. Hagen of South Orange, NJ. HAGINS, ELOISE GAY
Mrs. Eloise Gay Hagins, 84, of Americus, passed away at her residence on Tuesday September 20, 2011 after an extended illness. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, September 22, in Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus with the Rev. Wendy Joiner officiating Born December 18, 1926, in Isabella, GA, Mrs. Hagins was a daughter of the late Leonard Gay and Florine McDonald Gay. She was a homemaker, an avid gardener, and an exceptionally wonderful cook. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Americus. Halcomb, Bill
Bill Halcomb, 62, of Fleming Island, FL passed away on January 23, 2012 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born on October 13, 1949 in Middletown, OH to Arnold and Stella Halcomb. Bill had served his country honorably in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son. Before his illness he was active and enjoyed his involvement with Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida. He was an active motorcyclist and enjoyed riding his Harley. A real “family man”, Bill loved being with his children and grandchildren boating and waterskiing. He was also a member of the American Legion. John “John Boy” Hall, 52, of Georgetown, FL, passed away February 20, 2013. He was born on April 28, 1960 in Palatka, FL to parents James and Mary Hall. He had worked at Gustafson’s Dairy and loved fishing and hunting. Hamilton, Albert H.
Albert H. Hamilton, 85, of Green Cove Springs, FL, entered into the Gates of Heaven on January 30, 2012. He was born on May 9, 1926 in Lexington, KY to parents James and Molly Tucker Hamilton and was one of 10 children. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was the driver of the military jeep carrying General Patton. He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and attended Little Ruth Old Regular Baptist Church. He also was an avid fisherman and was an inspiration to many. Albert was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Tom and Charlie Hamilton, his sister, Sally Ratliff and son-in-laws, Raymond Jerousek and James Richards. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him dearly. Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Mabel Hamilton; children, Phylous Jerousek, Shelby Richards, Harold Hamilton, Alice (Edward) Wallen, James (Julia) Hamilton, Charles (Denise) Hamilton and Molly (David) Rice; brothers and sisters, Pattie June (Chester) Davis, Franklin D. Merle James Hammer, 67, of Orange Park and Cocoa Beach, passed away Monday, February 20, 2012. Merle recently retired from Boeing after 33 years of service at Kennedy Space Center, Fallen NV, and Cecil Field, Jacksonville. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. An avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, Merle was a proud member of Southern Cycle Air Group (SCAG). He was known as a generous host and BBQ Chef Extraordinaire. Don't you want to have any fun? was his philosophy. Merle is survived by his wife Jeanne Brubaker Hammer. Hans, Robert "Bob" Jr.
Robert “Bob” Hans, Jr., 62, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2012. He was born on July 15, 1949 in Cincinnati, OH. Bob grew up in Cincinnati where he graduated from Greenhills High School in 1967. Bob graduated from Defiance College (Defiance, OH) in 1971. He earned a Master’s Degree from Miami University (Oxford, OH) in 1974 and a Specialist’s Degree in Education from the University of Florida in 1975. Bob married Patricia Koehlke in 1974 and they moved to Gainesville, FL where Bob ran for the Florida Track Club and taught and coached at local high schools. Bob and family relocated to Clay County in 1983 where Bob spent over 20 years teaching and coaching cross-country and track and field at Orange Park High School, Middleburg High School and Ridgeview High School. Bob was an avid runner and a beloved coach. He enjoyed spending time with his family and participating in recreational sports. Bob attended Lakeside Community Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia Koehlke Hans of Middleburg, FL, and by his children, daughter Mandy Hans Moore (Sam) of Alexandria, VA and son Scott Hans of Middleburg, FL. He is also survived by: his parents, Robert J. HARRIS, JAMES ARTHUR
Mr. James Arthur Harris, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2011 in Green Cove Springs, Fla. He was born in Green Cove Springs on March 15, 1929. He honorably served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy and received the Bronze Star on the National Defense Service Medal and Ribbon also the Silver Star on the Good Conduct Medal sixth award for service ending July 24th, 1966. Upon retiring from the Navy, he moved to Jacksonville and worked at the Jacksonville Shipyard as a machinist. In 1979, he and his wife, Vivian moved back to Green Cove Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Elizabeth Harris of Green Cove Springs; sisters, Mary Daniels and Nancy Steigler; brothers, Richard (Dick) Harris and Herbert Harris. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vivian; son, James K. Harris (Tammy); daughter, Tara Harris Josephs (John); granddaughters, Caitlin and Amanda Harris, several nieces and nephews, and longtime friend, Bud Geiger. Haskell-Beynon, Joyce Ann
Joyce Ann Haskell-Beynon, 80, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. She was born on December 1, 1931, to parents Harry and Nada (Haskins) Gray in Rochester, N.Y. Joyce moved to the local area in 1989 from Jamestown, N.Y. She was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Beynon and her late husband were both members of the V.F.W. and D.A.V. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, quilting and crafting. Joyce loved to be with her family and spending time with all of them. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Hayn, Elfrieda E.
On Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 1:11 p.m., surrounded by loved ones, 83 year old Elfrieda E. Hayn, of Orange Park, Florida, passed into eternity, welcomed by the loving arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Hayn was under the care of Community Hospice at Governors Creek Health and Rehabilitation Center in Green Cove Springs, where she had remained for several weeks. Mrs. Hayn was born on September 13, 1928 in Guttenberg, NJ to the late Katarina Appel Stein and Johann H. Stein. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald G. Hayn. With a background in piano, Elfrieda obtained a music degree from Nyack Missionary College, New York. She volunteered as pianist and organist for her home church in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey for many years. When she moved to Orange Park in 1986 following the death of her husband, she joined Fellowship Bible Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, where she lovingly and faithfully served as pianist for 25 years. She was as generous a person as you could ever hope to meet and was particularly instrumental in the church obtaining property on which to build. Elfrieda greatly loved the Lord Jesus and was at all times eager to share His love with others. She thought of her church as her family and was always in attendance, unless her health prevented it. At church the little children knew her as the “candy lady,” as every Sunday after church she opened her bag of goodies and gave each child a piece of candy. She had developed her taste for “good chocolate” while working in her father’s candy store for a number of years. Surviving are one daughter, Heidi M. Hayn, and one son, Gerald J. Hayn, both of Orange Park; two grandsons, Tristan Keefe of New Jersey and Derek Keefe of Orange Park; one brother, John Stein (Martha), and one sister, Maria Egli, all of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey; several nieces and nephews and other family members; and many friends and loved ones of Fellowship Bible Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Middleburg, FL, all who cherish her memory. Elfrieda was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Mrs. Doris Marie Head, 84 of Keystone Heights passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2011 in Gainesville. Mrs. Head was born in Uleta, FL on November 9, 1927 to the late James Ervin and Elizabeth Glick Brooks, and was of the Baptist Faith. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Head had worked in the Cafeteria for many years in Keystone Heights Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband Loye I. Head and their grandson Timothy S. Head. Survivors are her children; Sherlyn M. Mitchell and her husband Murray of Port Charlotte, Tim E. Head of Ingis, and Terry E. Head of Melrose. She also leaves behind her grandchildren; Morgan D. Mary Ruth Roy Heatwole, 80, passed away Dec. 29, 2012 at Moosehaven Retirement Community. Mary Ruth was born Sept. 24, 1932 in Newark, Ohio to the late Fred and Lena (Mills) Lothes. She was a 1950 graduate of Hanover Toboso High School and was a bus driver for Newark City schools for many years. She resided at Moosehaven in Orange Park, Fl., where she retired after working there as a supervisor in Ryan Hall. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Middleburg, Fla., and the VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her first husband Earl Roy in 1976 and second husband Owen Heatwole in 1995. She is survived by her son, Danny (Kathy) Roy of Middleburg, Fla.; her daughter, Theresa Roy of Utica; three grandchildren: Craig Roy of Middleburg, Fla., Carrie Jackson of Aviano, Italy and Kyle Roy of Utica; four great-grandchildren; her brother, John (Reba) Lothes of Newark; and nieces and nephews. Herrmann, Theodore "Ted" C.
Captain Theodore "Ted" C. Herrmann, CHC, USN (ret.) Chaplain Ted Herrmann died on December 7, 2011 at his home on Fleming Island, Florida from heart problems. Pastor Herrmann was born in Linkenheim, Germany on April 16, 1924 and grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He graduated from Wagner College and received his Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the V-12 program. After ordination, he was first called to serve as the pastor of the Lutheran Church of Manitoba, Canada. He returned to duty in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as a chaplain in 1948, serving for more than thirty years. He had tours at air stations in Oceana, Virginia; Barbers Point, Hawaii; and Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Additional shore assignments included the Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Maryland; the Weapons Center at Dahlgren, Virginia; Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake California; Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, California; the Navy Yard in Washington, DC; and advanced training at the Chaplains' School in Newport, Rhode Island. Sea duty consisted of service aboard the USS Cadmus, Destroyer Squadron Six, USS Ranger, and USS Boxer . Overseas duty included tours in Okinawa with the Marines; Yokosuka, Japan; and Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland. After retirement from the Navy in 1978 at the rank of captain, he and his wife, June , built a home in Ramona, California. While there, the Reverend Herrmann received a Master of Science degree from San Diego State University and served as interim pastor to several Lutheran churches in San Diego, pastured at the First Congregational Church of Ramona, and the United Church of Lake San Marco. In 2004, they relocated to Fleming Island, Florida. Pastor Herrmann is pre-deceased by his son Theodore, Jr. and is survived by his wife June, daughter Nancy Fraser and husband Don (both retired Navy captains); two granddaughters, Jennifer Widenhofer and husband Jeff of Brooklyn, New York and Jessica Hernandez and husband Randy of Metairie, Louisiana. His four great-grandchildren are Madeline and Jacqueline Widenhofer, and Noah and Isaac Hernandez. He is also survived by a sister, Caroline McGowan and husband Bob of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Horne, 56, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 16, 2011 in Palatka, Fla. She was born on November 2, 1954 in Lewiston, ME to Raymond William Whiting, Sr. and Fernande Guimond Giguere. She was a resident of Clay County for the past 25 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to cook and surf the internet. She worked as an Inventory Control Manager at Winn Dixie for the past 18 years. She enjoyed watching NASCAR racing. Her favorite driver was Carl Edwards; she loved seeing him do his flip after winning a race. She loved to watch the Jaguars football games. Her family said the Jaguars have lost their biggest fan since she knew everything there was to know about the Jags. She was a huge lover of cats and was a true feline at heart. She was born in Manteo, N.C., to Palmer and Wilma Midgett, graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School in 1955 and received a BS from Jacksonville University in 1967. She worked as a school librarian in Callahan for ten years. She was married to George W. Huntley from November 30, 1956 until his accidental death on November 30, 2000. HUNTLEY, MARY WARD
Mary Ward Huntley, 78, of Orange Park, passed away Thursday September 1, 2011 at her home, Fairway Oaks, surrounded by her family. Mary Huntley was born on February 18, 1933, in Slocomb, Alabama to Wyatt C. and Ruby Elizabeth Ward. Mary grew up in Bonifay, Florida with her parents and her recently departed older brother, Harold Gene Ward where she completed high school. “Mary Frank,” as she was known to her hometown friends, was an outstanding student, skipping a grade level and graduating a year early. She was also an outstanding athlete, cheerleader and drum major. She attended Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Pensacola, Florida. Mary was also Miss Holmes County and Miss Fort Rucker. Mary met the love of her life, Louis L. Huntley, who was an officer in the U.S. Army, while working at Fort Rucker, Alabama. They were married on July 27th, 1952 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. Mary and Louis built a beautiful life together and were married almost 54 years before he died July 12, 2006. Mary and Louis are survived by their three children, Frank, Edith (Kemp Stickney) and Ward (Betsy) Huntley. Their grandchildren include Eason Huntley, Anne Michael Smith (Rick), Macy Huntley, Ashley Huntley, Taylor Huntley, Farrell Huntley, Bogan Huntley, Crocker Stickney and Eliza Stickney. Mary was an active member of the Orange Park United Methodist Church where she chaired numerous committees including the Altar Guild which she founded and Worship Committee. She served as Youth Director and was President of the Women’s Group. Mary was also very involved in the community. She served on the Board of Visitors at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts where she established the Florida Artist’s Fund to give students an opportunity and subsidy for workshops, field trips and hands-on experiences. She was a member of the board of the Clay County Salvation Army, the Clay County Council on Aging and was presented their arts award for her financial support of the cultural arts in Clay County in 2008. Mary was a past president of the American Cancer Society in Clay County, participated in the non-profit organization now known as Clay & Baker Kids Net and served on the board of the Penney Retirement Community. Mary was well known for her gift of hospitality and gardening. She served as a past president of the Orange Park Garden Club and was in the Cardinal’s Garden Circle. She was also noted for her flower arrangements for which she won numerous awards. She was a member of PEO and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. The love that Louis Huntley had for his treasured wife Mary will now embrace visitors of the Lee Adams Florida Artists Gallery. Envisioned as a bridge for Florida artists of the past, present and future and located at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts in the Mary Ward Huntley Wing. The gallery was formally dedicated to the residents of the State of Florida in November 2004. Mary Huntley passionately believed that “great artists are everywhere… some of the best live here in our state, in our community, in our backyard.” It was her commitment to nurturing these artists, and Louis’ love for her that created this gallery. Her legacy to the visual arts and to the inspired artists she so adored will forever live for visitors of her gallery and for artists whose works will be on display for the community to view. Mary was a loving, gracious, Christian lady. A true lifter, Mary never shied from speaking kindness to others. She was loved and adored by her Children and Grandchildren and will be missed. The beauty and light she brought into the lives of everyone she knew and touched will be with us always. HUNTLEY, WILLIAM T. “BILL”
Mr. William T. “Bill” Huntley, 90, of East Palatka passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka following a brief illness. Born in Doctors Inlet, Fla., he was a 1938 graduate of Clay High School in Green Cove Springs and a 1942 graduate of the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. He came to Palatka in 1947, where he and his family opened the Huntley Brothers Supermarket and wholesale operation. The family closed the wholesale warehouse in 1953 and began Huntley Brothers' Heating and Air Conditioning and True Value Hardware Store. With his brothers, He formed the convenience store chain, Huntley Jiffy Stores, Inc., in 1966, which grew to 340 stores throughout Florida and southeast Georgia. He and his brother, Louis L. Huntley operated the chain until it was sold in 1990. He continued operating businesses, including Reflect-A-Light, Inc. Mr. Huntley recognized that he was blessed to help continue the business legacy begun by his father and uncles in the 1920s. He was a member of the Retail Grocers Association of Florida and served as its chairman of the board in 1991. He was a member of the St. James Methodist Church in Palatka where he served in many capacities, including chairing the Board of Trustees and Church Council. He was a longtime supporter of the Rodehaver Boys Ranch. He served on the board of directors for decades and was president of the board in 1991 – 1992. In 2006 he and his wife, Bonnie, provided the means to initiate, plan, build and furnish a home for 10 boys and their cottage parents at the ranch, named the Huntley Cottage. He was a 56 year member of the Rotary Club of Palatka where he served on various committees and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Huntley was a long time member of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce in Palatka where he served as its President in 1987. During his year as President he instituted the Putnam Society which brought in insightful public speakers. During his presidency, the Chamber was recognized with the national award, Award of Excellence. He enjoyed taking care of the family horses until he was in this late 80s. The joy of his life was his family. He enjoyed traveling to see his daughters and grandsons in Africa, Spain and Colorado. Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Edith Huntley; two brothers, John Huntley and Louis Huntley; and one sister, Lillian Huning. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Huntley of East Palatka; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Mark Uhlfelder of Aspen, Colorado, and Ellen and Matt Dube of Gainesville; one brother, Francis Huntley of Palatka; three sisters, Rosa Keene of St. Augustine, Betty Johnson of Jacksonville and Jeanette Huntley of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, David Uhlfelder, Joshua Uhlfelder and Andrew Dube; and 17 nieces and nephews.
